THE HUMAN MEMORY

Hey what's up guise here I'm talking about the human memory. I think that to knowing our memory is so joyful because here we'll catch our errors like How we forgets the things or learned materials, types of memory, different stages & many other extra.

Memory- Memory refers to retaining & recalling information over a period of time depending upon the nature of cognitive task.
*Cognitive- to recall, calculate, discuss, analyze, problem solve etc..

Memory is usually divided into three storage system: sensory, Short-term Memory and Long-Term Memory

i) Sensory Memory- Sensory memory is affiliated with the transduction of energy. The environment makes available a variety of source of information (light, sound, smell, heat, cold, etc.). In the process of transduction, a memory is created. This memory is very short (Less than 1/2 second for vision; about 3 seconds for hearing). Sensory memory sense the things by five sense organs.

The sensory memory retain an exact copy of what is seen or heard (Visual & auditory). It is absolutely critical that the learner attend to the information at this initial stage in order to transfer it to the next one.

ii) Short-Term memory-  After entering sensory memory, a limited amount of information is transferred into short-term memory. Selective attention determines what information moves from sensory memory to short-term memory. STM is most often stored as sound, especially in recalling words, but may be stored as images. It works basically the same as a computer's RAM (random Access Memory).

Short-Term Memory is also called working memory and relates to what we are thinking about at any given moment in time. In Freudian terms, this is conscious memory. It is created by our paying attention to an external stimulus.

Characteristics

  • STM has a limited capacity of up to seven pieces of independent information.
  • The brief duration of these items last from 3 to 20 seconds.
  • Decay appears to be the primary mechanism of memory loss.

Within STM, there are two basic operations:

Iconic Memory- The ability to hold visual images.

Auditory memory- the ability to hold sounds.

iii) Long-Term Memory- This is relatively permanent storage. Information is store on the basis of meaning and importance. The process of transforming information from STM to LTM involves the Encoding or consolidation  of information. In this process of organization, the meaningfulness or emotional content of item may play a greater roll in its relation into LTM.

Characteristics

  • This is relatively permanent storage.
  • Information is stored on the basis of meaning & importance.
  • Chunking the information.

Conclusion-

Here we have looked that how our memory works to learn the information. Memory is seen as consisting of three interrelated processes of encoding, storage and retrieval. The Stage Model of Memory compares memory processes with the working of a computer and suggests that incoming information is processed through three distinct stages of sensory memory, short-term memory and long-term memory. Long-term memory has been classified in many ways. One major classification is that of declarative and procedural memory and another is that of episodic and semantic memory.
